Other Experiences
Wingrock Elementary In 1986, taught art for one school year, kindergarten through 5 th grade, at private elementary school in Palos Verde’s, CA. Responsibilities included designing and resourcefully implementing academically oriented art curriculum.
Westsound Recording, Inc. Between 1979 and 1985, conceived, designed, built, opened, operated and closed a 24 track analog music recording studio, primarily in partnership with brother Kirk Matteson. Facility was highly regarded while in operation and was the only one in the Northwest United States designed and built from the ground up.

Falconry - Master falconer. Hunting with falcons is a life long passion, and has been passed down from father to son.

National Security Seminar - 2007 Civilian participant at United States Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, PA.
Archives of Falconry Museum - Contributed to landscape design and construction at the Peregrine Fund’s World Center for Birds of Prey, Boise, ID (2006). Co-designer on “Falconer’s Remembrance Wall” plaza. Walkway involves about $50,000 value in infrastructure development. Design features 3 Matteson bronze sculptures.
Church Executive Board - 2001 – 2003 Served executive board member term for First Church of Christ, Scientist, Olympia, WA. During term of service helped with decision to sell old building and build a new church. Currently, still active in church including work on new building committee, usher committee and lecture committee.
Overhulse Neighborhood Association - 1987 – 2002 During these years, often acted in capacity of president to help build grass roots coalition of neighbors actively engaged in neighborhood, county and state growth management issues. Required endless meetings, legal correspondence and participation in public hearings. Law suits and media interviews were managed with dignity and limited resources.
Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice - 2006 – 2008 Volunteer at annual “Peace Works” conference and active participant in effort to establish a sculptural tribute to Rachel Corrie at The Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA
Capital Land Trust Fundraising - 2004 – 2006 Made sculpture donations leveraged to maximize additional donations to this highly effective non-partisan land trust.
League of Women’s Voters Fundraising - Significant art donations to annual fundraising auction.
Artists for Charity - Co-produced visual artists performance event at Washington Center for the Performing Arts, Olympia, WA during semiannual “Art Walk” night. (2002)
Prison Ministries - Participated in Bible lessons and “one on one” spiritual counseling (when requested) in the Thurston County Jail and Shelton State Penal Institution, WA (1983 – 1985)
Interfaith Works - Volunteer worker during interfaith Thanksgiving service in Olympia, WA. Activity was a celebrated success and included many different religious denominations. (2003)
Leatherback sea turtle field work - Help research biologists monitor, record data and protect nesting sea turtles in Mexico (1989) and Trinidad (1997)

Peregrine Falcon reintroduction release site monitoring as part of species reintroduction program along Snake River in WA (1987)
Citizens to save Pioneer Park - Participated in multi-year effort to keep 113 acre natural wooded area on Mercer Island, WA from being converted into a golf course. Pioneer Park is currently considered an irreplaceable community treasure. (1975)
