| Step 1: A small reference model |

| Before I make a large bronze sculpture, I make a small model called a "maquette". The maquette for Spring Snow (pictured above) is more refined than most. Usually, I just make a rough clay "sketch" allowing me to work out the idea without moving tons of clay around. Sometimes, I also draw my ideas on paper before beginning the maquette. But the three dimensional maquette is considerably more helpful for seeing the way a change I might make on the side, affects the view from the back, and so on. |
