Forgiven ã2005 by Ross Matteson soap stone 5 x 8 x 5 inches private collection |
Forgiven was inspired by the compassion of a Columbine High School graduate who came to support Red Lake High School students the day after a tragic shooting spree on March 21, 2005 left 10 people dead and many injured. This student, who had survived a similar tradgedy, was one of the few people allowed into the Red Lake Indian Reservation at that time. He shared with them the hope of time to heal their grief and the important place that forgiveness plays in this healing work. For one friend, they interpreted the sculpture as an apology to the natural world for devestation brought on it by humanity. When the time is right, this sculpture is one that I hope to make at a monumental scale. (next sculpture) |
